The Veredus Young Jump Vento Save The Sheep is a fetlock boot for the hind legs, made for young jumping horses. An anatomical shell in shockproof polyurethane sits around the fetlock, with a lining in Techno Sheepskin inside it. Veredus states that the dimensions and weights of this model comply with the FEI Regulations for the Young Horses categories.
About these fetlock boots
What this model is meant for. This is not a tendon boot but a fetlock boot for the hind legs. The English name is Fetlock Boot. It closes around the fetlock and is shorter than a tendon boot for the front leg. Veredus designed it for young jumping horses and adds that you can also use it on horses of any age. Front and hind models are not interchangeable; for the front legs you need a tendon boot.
What Veredus says about use at competitions, and what you can check yourself. Veredus states that the dimensions and weights of this fetlock boot comply with the FEI Regulations for the Young Horses categories. That is a statement from the manufacturer. Worth knowing: the FEI does not vet models and publishes no list of brands, so there is no stamp you can fall back on. What you can do is check for yourself whether the boot meets the conditions. For international jumping classes for horses from five to eight years old the rules are: a single rounded hard shell on the inside only, an interior length of no more than 16 cm, only non-elastic hook-and-loop fastening at least 5 cm wide, and no hooks, buckles or clips. On top of that, in all jumping classes everything on one leg together may weigh no more than 500 grams, including when wet. On the ground, the steward decides.
The lining. Save The Sheep is the designation Veredus uses for its linings in Techno Sheepskin: a man-made material with the structure of a fleece, containing no sheepskin. That is the difference here with the standard Young Jump Vento, which has a lining in Aerox neoprene with a 3D mesh fabric. A fleece lining lays itself softly around the fetlock; it is also the place where a young horse catches itself most often, so that soft layer is something you notice. A fleece structure does hold more sand and hair than a smooth lining, so brush it out after use.
Shell, ventilation and fastening. The shell is anatomically shaped in shockproof polyurethane: it spreads a knock over a larger surface instead of passing it on at a single point. Veredus also states twin ventilation on this model, with air inlets so that heat and moisture can escape from under the boot. You close it with a double hook-and-loop fastening, so with two straps; that can be set precisely per horse and you can check it yourself against the criteria above.
Limitations. A fetlock boot covers the fetlock only. If you also want to cover the tendon of the front leg, you need a separate model for that. And a young horse grows: what fitted last season can be too small this season, so measure again before you order more.
