The Samshield Shield’Rup in brushed aluminium is a stirrup whose outer arm can open sideways. Samshield builds it from aeronautical aluminium with a steel insert, with an inclined platform and an elastomer under the sole. It is meant for riders who want a stirrup with an opening mechanism and a stable footing at the same time, in a brushed aluminium finish.
About this stirrup
The Shield’Rup is the Samshield stirrup with a patented side-opening system. Samshield describes it as an opening of 180 degrees: the outer arm can come free in a fall and then returns automatically to its starting position. So you do not have to reset the mechanism by hand before you mount again. How much force that takes, the manufacturer does not put in figures.
The frame is made of aeronautical aluminium with a steel insert. Samshield states that the whole stays strong even when the outer arm is open: the steel at the core takes up the forces, the aluminium keeps the whole thing light. A weight in grams Samshield does not publish, and the dimensions of the stirrup no more than that.
The platform your foot rests on is inclined. According to Samshield that supports the heel position and lets you sit more comfortably. Under the sole sits an elastomer connection that takes up part of the movement between foot and stirrup. The sole itself is interchangeable: there are two versions, one with standard grip and one with extra grip from spikes. The stirrup leather slot is not in the middle of the stirrup head but beside it, and Samshield gives two reasons for that: you find the stirrup again more easily with your foot and the stirrup hangs more evenly.
This page is about the version in brushed aluminium. That is a brushed finish which stays close to the metal's own colour and therefore draws little attention away from your saddle and your stirrup leathers. Two things to reckon with before you choose. The opening mechanism sits in the stirrup itself and contains moving parts, so sand and mud do not belong in there: the stirrup asks for a clean now and then. And the sole with spikes bites into the tread of your boot. That grip works, but it calls for a boot with a sturdy sole and costs you some sole tread over time.
