The Freejump Soft'Up Classic is a safety stirrup with a single spring steel branch and a flexible Elastollan outer branch. The eye sits straight, parallel to the tread, which turns your toe slightly inwards. The model was drawn by the Italian design house Pininfarina and developed together with Pénélope Leprevost, for riders who want a straight leg position. At Maddelin in Black and Red.
About this stirrup
Freejump aims the Soft'Up Classic at riders who want to keep the leg straight underneath them and who take a shoe size up to EU 44. The angle of the eye is what sets it apart from the Soft'Up Pro: here the eye sits parallel to the tread and steers the toe a little inwards. Freejump states that this position follows the anatomy of the female pelvis. That does not make it a ladies' stirrup, but it does explain why the model exists alongside the Pro.
One branch instead of two. The load-bearing branch is hardened spring steel with a mechanical strength of 1200 MPa, overmoulded with an elastomer. That combination works as a suspension: it absorbs part of the forces that reach the stirrup at every stride and on landing, instead of passing them on undiminished. Freejump calls this its Shock Absorption technology and speaks of an air-cushion effect. You notice it most at speed, on hard ground and in long sessions.
The outer branch. The outer branch is made of Elastollan, a flexible material that deforms. Under pressure from the foot that branch can swing open, which makes it easier for the foot to come free in a fall; afterwards it returns to position. That is how the manufacturer describes the mechanism. Freejump adds itself that its stirrups are not personal protective equipment and cannot ensure the rider's safety. That is more honest than the promise you read elsewhere, and it is correct: a stirrup cannot ride for you.
Tread and grip. The sole carries a supergrip pattern with removable steel studs and fibreglass in the tread, which keeps the whole thing wear-resistant. The studs are the part that wears out first; Freejump offers a studs kit with eighteen steel studs and a key for that, and lists that kit expressly for the Soft'Up Classic. The centre of gravity is shifted forwards, which tips the tread slightly backwards and lets your heel drop by itself.
What to watch out for. Freejump gives EU 44 as the upper shoe size limit. If you have a larger foot, this model is not an option. For this model the manufacturer also publishes no scores per discipline, unlike the Pro and Lite versions; what the Classic does in showjumping, cross-country or dressage is therefore not set down on paper. Stirrup leathers with a broad strap sit most neatly against the wide eye, but any ordinary stirrup leather fits through it too.
